HYROX
A standardised international hybrid race: eight 1 km runs alternating with eight workout stations, identical at every venue.
The facts
| Format | Hybrid race |
|---|---|
| Structure | Eight 1 km runs alternating with eight workout stations — SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls — for 8 km of running in total. The format is standardised across venues, which is what makes results comparable between cities. Distances, loads and repetition counts vary by category; check the organiser for the current standards. |

Our take
The defining feature is standardisation. The same race in every city means a result in one place is comparable with a result in another, which is rare in this category and is most of why the format travels.
The running load is the other defining feature. Eight kilometres of running, broken into eight pieces, is a lot — and it is broken up in a way that makes it harder rather than easier, because you never settle into a rhythm and you never arrive at a run fresh. Runners tend to find the running easier than expected and the sled work considerably harder.
